The Weak Link: Spencer Silver’s Accidental Adhesive
The journey began in 1968 with Dr. Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist tasked with developing a super-strong adhesive for the aerospace industry. However, his experiment took an unexpected turn. Five years later, in 1974, fate intervened. Another 3M scientist, Art Fry, was singing in his church choir and grew frustrated with the paper scraps he used as bookmarks constantly falling out of his hymnal. Remembering Silver’s peculiar adhesive, Fry had a lightbulb moment. He applied a small amount of the adhesive to the back of his paper bookmarks, and voila! The problem was solved.
Fry, a champion of 3M’s “permitted bootlegging” policy that allowed employees to pursue independent projects, saw potential beyond bookmarks. He envisioned small, adhesive-backed notes that could be used for quick reminders and messages.
From Lab Bench to Office Supply: Development and Launch
Fry partnered with Silver, and together they began developing the concept. The initial notes were made from leftover canary yellow scrap paper from a nearby lab, a color choice born purely out of convenience. Through persistence and a series of refinements, they created a product that balanced stickiness with removability.
The official launch, however, wasn’t without its challenges. The initial product, named “Press ‘n Peel” in 1977, received a lukewarm reception. Undeterred, the team conducted a successful product test in Boise, Idaho, which therefore paved the way for a national rollout in 1980 under the now-iconic name “Post-it Notes.” So, now you know how the post-it note was discovered by accident.
