Did my wig just fall off?
Look, if you have not experienced a ‘did my wig just fall off’ moment, that is, your wig has not fallen off your head in public, you haven’t experienced one of the premium forms of embarrassment as a lady!
It has happened to me. Not in public-public though, but not at home.
I was animatedly telling someone a story, and at a point, I threw my head back, by the time I brought it back to its normal position, I felt like some weight had left my head and I thought to myself, “Did my wig just fall off?” I looked back and there was my wig, laying on the chair I was sitting on!
I didn’t allow myself to process what just happened, I immediately entered damage control.
You know what I did?
You know how you raise your hand to take permission to speak in class? That’s how I rose my hand and said, “Excuse me”. The person said, “It’s okay” and I promptly picked up the wig from the chair, straightened it up and wore it back on and carried on discussing like nothing happened.
It was so funny when I finally allowed myself to process it. I was just happy that my wig cap and hair underneath the wig was in tip top condition!
I was also happy it didn’t happen outside-outside.
Tips to handle such a situation with grace:
Stay Calm: The first step is to take a deep breath. Freaking out will only draw more attention. Remember, wigs are more common than you think, and most people won’t be fazed.
Assess the Situation: Is your wig completely off, or just askew? If it’s slightly askew, you might be able to subtly adjust it back into place. If it’s completely off, don’t chase after it!
Embrace the Moment: Sometimes, a touch of humor can diffuse the situation. A quick “Oops, looks like the wind wanted to play!” can lighten the mood.
Find Refuge: If you’re comfortable, excuse yourself to a restroom or quiet corner. Here, you can decide if you want to reattach your wig (having wig clips or headbands on hand is a lifesaver!) or embrace your natural hair for the rest of the outing.
Remember: Confidence is key! Rock your natural hair or put your wig back on with a smile. Most people will be more impressed by your poise than anything else.
So, ladies, has this ever happened to you? Have you ever experienced a ‘did my wig just fall’ moment? How did it happen and how did you handle it?
