In 1945, Percy Spencer, an American engineer working for Raytheon, was testing a new vacuum tube called a magnetron. Magnetrons are used to generate microwaves, which are a type of electromagnetic radiation.

While Spencer was testing the magnetron, he noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket had started to melt. He realized that the microwaves from the magnetron were causing the chocolate to heat up.

Spencer decided to experiment further with microwaves. His observation of his melted chocolate bar unveiled the potential of microwaves for heating food. His curiosity blossomed into experimentation, leading him to explore the effects on popcorn kernels and eggs. He placed a bag of popcorn kernels near the magnetron and watched as they popped into fluffy popcorn. He also tried heating up an egg with microwaves, but the egg exploded! Haha.

These early trials paved the way for the development of the first crude microwave oven, a far cry from the sleek countertop appliances we know today.

Spencer realized that he could use microwaves to heat food quickly and easily. He developed the first microwave oven in 1947. The first microwave ovens were very large and expensive, but they quickly became smaller and more affordable.

Today, microwaves are a staple in most kitchens. We also use microwaves in commercial kitchens and restaurants to cook and heat food quickly and efficiently.
